Congratulations to Sun City Hilton Head Masters and the 40 swimmers who raised over $14,000.00 for the American Cancer Society! The team held a Swim for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on Sept. 30, 2016 at the Hilton Head Lakehouse Indoor Pool. They got the idea from a club in Arizona and felt they could do a similar event.
Donations were based on the number of laps or time a swimmer could complete. They also incorporated caregivers and survivors who either swam or water walked in support of swim club members who have had cancer touch their lives. The event ran for four hours with 40 swimmers. The event was capped by a floating Luminaria ceremony in memory to loved ones who lost the fight against cancer. As the luminarias floated in the pool, one of the swim members, surprised everyone by playing “Amazing Grace” on the bag pipes.
At the end of the event Sun City Masters swam or water walked a total of:
1,600 laps or 40,000 yards
That’s equal to the length of 400 football fields or 22.7 miles
The team had a wonderful time and created many special memories. It’s really amazing what a group of senior swimmers can accomplish! Sun City Hilton Head Masters are hopeful more Master Swim Clubs will consider running a Swim for Life – together we can fight cancer!
